Shea-Porter Dominates Guinta in Second Debate

North Conway, NH— Tonight, Carol Shea-Porter continued her dominant debate performances, holding Guinta accountable for his constant deception of New Hampshire voters. On issue after issue, Frank desperately tried to inflate his record, but Carol wouldn’t let him. She held him responsible for voting against funding for opioid treatment and prevention and for failing to provide adequate funding for the new programs passed last summer. He wasn’t able to defend his irresponsible votes to take drug treatment away from 6,000 people.

“This is important work that needs to be done, but if you’re going to vote against the ACA than you’re voting to take away treatment. There’s no other way to explain that. You actually voted against the bill, the Omnibus, last December which had money for treatment for opioid and heroin addiction,” Shea-Porter said. “Now you’re on the Budget Committee. You didn’t get your budget passed.  But you voted for things in the Budget Committee, and one of them, you had an opportunity to vote for more money for the opioid crisis, and you said no. So you can’t stand here and say that you know that we need these resources and then go to Washington and vote against it,” added Shea-Porter.

Shea-Porter laid out her plans for the future, “There’s no statute of limitations on caring for people,” she said. She called for affordable higher education for Americans and highlighted her record expanding Pell Grants and lowering student loan interest rates by having students apply directly for a federal school loan. The subsidies that banks used to collect were plowed back into increasing Pell Grant funding.

On funding for education for children with disabilities, Shea-Porter said, “It’s really shameful, it’s a commitment [Congress] made, and they should honor it.” She showed the audience her compassion and commitment for fighting for all Americans, not just those at the very top. “We have to keep working at this because it’s an obligation we have to every child no matter where that child is no matter what the zip code is, no matter what the difficulties that their family faces or the child faces, the challenges. Every child deserves an opportunity to be fully engaged and part of what I call a piece of the American Dream,” concluded Shea-Porter

The Conway Daily Sun Endorses The Republican In Independent Clothes For NH 1st District

Today the Conway Daily Sun endorsed Republican Independent Shawn O’Connor for Congress in the First Congressional District.

O’Connor the candidate to beat the ‘rigged’ system,” so far is only available in print, is more proof that even solid Republicans cannot stomach Guinta’s reelection effort.

“We disqualify Guinta for fudging his campaign finances and then lying about it,” they stated. At least the people of the North Country can agree on one thing, Congressman Guinta is a lying, corrupt politician.

If they disqualified Guinta for lying, why would they promote another candidate who also has questionable integrity and has lied to people about being mistreated?

Remember those lies that O’Connor lobbed at the Democratic Party and the Shea-Porter campaign about starting a “whisper campaign” against him. He attacked Shea-Porter and Ray Buckley, Chair of the NH Democratic Party, but when the reporters began digging, they could not find any proof of his allegations.

The fact is the Conway Daily Sun wants to endorse a Republican and they just could not endorse Guinta, so they picked the next best thing: A Republican pretending to be an Independent.

Other than the fact the Conway Daily Sun’s editorial board would not even sit down with the Democratic candidate, they spelled out their bias quite clearly in their editorial.

“And although he lines up with Democrats on progressive issues, as a former staffer for Jim Greenwood, a Republican Congressman from Philadelphia, he is no stranger to conservative ideas.”

“Corporate tax rate too high at 39%? … [O’Connor] says cut it in half.”

Cutting taxes on corporations who don’t pay their fair share already does not sound very progressive. It sure does not sound like something Senator Bernie Sanders or Senator Elizabeth Warren would support.

The Conway Daily Sun also referenced “polls” that claim O’Connor is pulling “20%” of the electorate. The truth is that O’Connor has not broken double digits in any public poll, which would disqualify him from the upcoming debate on Oct 31st in North Conway that the Conway Daily Sun is promoting.

O’Connor is trying to say he is ‘progressive’ because he supports an increase in the minimum wage. You know what, so does 80% of Granite Staters including every Democratic candidate up and down the ticket.

O’Connor also likes to promote that he endorsed Senator Sanders for President. The problem is that those in the Bernie Sanders for President N.H. Steering Committee do not support O’Connor. In fact, the Steering Committee just announced their endorsement of Carol Shea-Porter, a true progressive.

Someone who once claimed to be from the “Warren wing of the party” now says if he is elected he will caucus with Republicans. How progressive of him.

The fact is that O’Connor is a carpet-bagging Republican who left Wall Street and moved up here from NYC to buy himself a seat in Congress. So far O’Connor has loaned over $1.2 million dollars to his own campaign.

Things are going so bad from O’Connor that him most recent FEC filing shows that he made -$315 last quarter. That’s right, he actually refunded more donations than he brought in.  O’Connor’s campaign is hemorrhaging money so badly that O’Connor himself had to loan his campaign another $200,000. Even after all of that additional money, he only has $23,601 left at the end of the quarter.

Following O’Connor’s campaign is like watching two trains running head on at each other. You know it’s going to hurt, but you just cannot turn away.

In New Campaign Ad ‘Vision’, Shea-Porter Showcases Distinct Differences Between Candidates

In New Hampshire’s First Congressional District, we have two very distinctly different choices.

Guinta ABC MailerIn one corner we have Congressman Frank Guinta, who in 2010 won the distinguished title of “Most Corrupt Politician” from the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Guinta has also been busted by the FEC once for illegal campaign contributions and already has another FEC complaint against him.  Guinta receives lavish campaign support from the Koch Brothers network, The Americans for Prosperity, and dozens of special interest Super PACs.  During previous campaigns Guinta received heavy support from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) who actively lobby against unions and push for so-called “Right to Work” in our State House.

In the other corner we have former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, a proven fighter against the special interests and who refuses to take corporate PAC money.  She is committed to preserving Social Security and Medicare for future generations and refuses to let politicians balance their budgets on the backs of seniors.  Shea-Porter is a strong labor ally who has fought hard against attacks on workers rights and specifically against attacks on the USPS.

“I’m running for Congress because New Hampshire needs an independent voice, someone who isn’t beholden to corporations or special interests. DC Democrats weren’t very happy when regular citizens asked me to run again because they know I’m independent and I refuse to accept corporate PAC or DC lobbyist money.  When I’m back in Congress, I’ll once again stand up for veterans, seniors, students, and working men and women.  I’ll fight for raising the minimum wage, for equal pay for equal work, paid family leave, affordable child care, Planned Parenthood, and debt-free college,” said Carol Shea-Porter.

Earlier this week, the Carol Shea-Porter for Congress campaign released “Vision,” their first campaign ad of the season.

The 30-second spot highlights Carol’s commitment to New Hampshire values: family, hard work, responsibility, and fairness.  In the ad, Carol talks about her priorities, like passing equal pay for equal work, raising wages for workers, and making sure veterans get the benefits they deserve.

Shea-Porter Calls On Guinta To Renounce Trump’s Statement About Veterans With PTSD

Congressman Frank Guinta remains silent after Donald Trump attacks veterans suffering from PTSD as not being “strong enough.”

Yesterday at an event with Retired American Warriors PAC, Donald Trump implied that veterans returning from combat with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are not strong enough to handle it.

“When people come back from war and combat and they see maybe what the people in this room have seen many times over, and you’re strong and you can handle it, but a lot of people can’t handle it,” Trump told a room full of veterans.

According to the Lone Survivor Foundation, “1 in 3” combat service members return with “invisible injuries” like “combat trauma, traumatic brain injury (or both).”  Combat trauma, or PTSD, has many tell tale warning signs such as “flashbacks, avoidance, isolation, hyper-arousal reactions including anger outbursts.”

On average we lose 22 veterans a day to suicide. Many of these veterans are suffering from PTSD reliving the worst moments in their lives, over and over again.  Many veterans organizations have put access to treatment for PTSD as their highest priority.

We should not be surprised by Trump’s comments about veterans suffering from PTSD as he said that Senator John McCain was not a war hero because “he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

Ironically, Trump himself avoided military service four times through student deferrals and was eventually medically disqualified in 1968. He told reporters at the Washington Post that he had “a bone spur in his foot, but did not recall which foot had been injured.”

In New Hampshire, Congressman Frank Guinta, one of CREW’s most corrupt politicians, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, remained silent after Trump’s outrageous statements last night. Guinta’s opponent, former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, condemned Trump and called for Guinta to “renounce Trump’s comments” in a statement released last night.

“Frank Guinta is serving as a lapdog for Donald Trump instead of standing up for the people Trump is bullying. Trump’s newest attack is again on veterans, and again, Mr. Guinta is silent. Carol Shea-Porter was a military spouse and served on the House Armed Services Committee.  She has met many brave men and women who served their country in war and are now being treated for PTSD. They are heroes and do not deserve Trump’s insults,” said Naomi Andrews, spokeswoman for Carol Shea-Porter.

This is not the first time Guinta has taken heat over his “support” for veterans.  Last week we released a story about Guinta’s “double speak” when it came to supporting veterans and funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Guinta voted against the Omnibus Appropriations bill that funds the government. The bill increased fundingfor the VA by $6.4 billion. The legislation, which fortunately was not tanked by Guinta’s refusal to support it, increased funding for medical care by $4.7 billion and provided funds to hire 770 VA disability claims processors to tackle the claims backlog.”

Will Guinta continue to support Donald Trump who: attacked war hero, John McCain; disparaged the Kahn’s, a gold star family who lost their son in combat; and implied that combat service members returning with PTSD are not strong enough.

If this is the type of “support” that a Trump/Guinta ticket has to offer, they can just keep it.

Frank Guinta Violates FEC Regulations Yet Again, Triggers New FEC Complaint

The New Hampshire Democratic Party Files
FEC Complaint Against Frank Guinta

Concord, N.H. – On Monday, the New Hampshire Democratic Party filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission regarding Mr. Guinta’s violation of the terms of a Conciliation Agreement he had signed with the FEC just last year, and violation of federal law against using campaign funds for personal use.

Guinta Is A Damned Liar

Front page editorial from Joseph McQuaid, Publisher of the Union Leader.

In the original FEC ruling, the FEC determined the money Guinta “loaned to his campaign,” was actually his parents money thus making the donation an illegal campaign contribution.

For years, Guinta lied to the people of New Hampshire about where they money came from. He repeatedly claimed he forgot about a savings account with over $350,000 in it. Later he claimed the money was a “family pot” that he was free to use.  The people of New Hampshire did not believe him and the FEC proved through their investigation, that he was lying.

The FEC and Guinta entered an agreement that the Guinta campaign would have to refund the $355,000 dollars to his parents and pay a minimal fine of $15,000.

According to the NHDP’s new complaint, the NHDP is alleging that the Guinta campaign gave some of the money intended to be returned to Guinta’s parents, to himself.

Former State GOP Chair, Fergus Cullen, was the first to highlight that Guinta put the money into an account within his control and listed the money deposited as an asset in his FEC disclosure statement.

“We think it’s important for the voters of New Hampshire to know that Frank Guinta continues to engage in this type of behavior, which is in violation of the law, and a violation of the agreement that he voluntarily entered into,” said former NHDP Chair Kathy Sullivan.

Noting his vantage point as a former member of Congress, Paul Hodes stressed that “it’s really rule number one” for candidates not to mix campaign and personal funds.

The disturbing nature of these violations is the flagrant disregard for the law over several years and campaign cycles. “This is a pattern,” added NHDP Chairman Ray Buckley. “Frank Guinta and his campaign spokespeople have lied over the past four cycles. Why does anyone believe that the people of New Hampshire can trust anything that Frank Guinta says?”

Please see below for a copy of the complaint filed on Monday.

Guinta and Ashooh’s Friend, Jerry DeLemus Expected To Plead Guilty To Federal Charges

Rochester, NH–  Jerry DeLemus, Trump’s Veteran’s Coalition co-chair, who is praised and admired by both NH-01 Republican Congressional Candidates Rich Ashooh and Frank Guinta, is expected to plead guilty next week to federal charges stemming from his role as “Sheriff” in the standoff at Cliven Bundy’s Nevada ranch in 2014.

Republican Congressional Candidate Rich Ashooh has said nothing. Perhaps he is hoping that nobody knows how much he admired Jerry DeLemus, even though he knew him to be an extremist who started a Glen Beck 9/12 chapter in NH, was a birther, and supported extreme right wing positions. In spite of that, Rich Ashooh was a guest at an event for a PAC that Delemus headed, and in a speech there, called Jerry DeLemus “the fist of liberty.”

Republican Congressional Candidate Frank Guinta defended his good friend.  In a letter that DeLemus’s attorney submitted to the court, Guinta wrote: “(I) have found [DeLemus] to be a man of strong passions with a thirst for freedom.”

Naomi Andrews, spokeswoman for former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter released the following statement:  “NH-01 Republican Congressional Candidates Frank Guinta and Rich Ashooh’s support and open approval of so many of Jerry DeLemus’s actions and hateful statements, coupled with their support for Donald Trump and silence on Trump’s actions and hateful statements, prove they lack judgment and moral courage, and do not represent New Hampshire values.”

Guinta Lies About Opposing The TPP In New Campaign Video

Guinta deceives voters on TPP position after casting deciding vote to give President Obama power to fast-track TPP

Rochester, NH— This morning, in a new campaign video his campaign released. Congressman Frank Guinta again deceived voters, this time about his position on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Based on his past support for TPP, this is just another dishonest political stunt to distract from his campaign financing scandal.  Frank Guinta has actually been very supportive of TPP, writing to President Obama to urge him to move it forward. Here is a report from WGBH:

Only one New Englander has declared support for the bill, according to The Hill: New Hampshire Republican Frank Guinta. Guinta signed onto a public letter with other freshman Republicans in support of the measure.”

Frank Guinta signed a letter to President Obama that promoted TPP and the passage of TPA (Trade Promotion Authority).  Guinta’s letter said,  “Swift action early this year on TPA would pave the way for sustained economic growth and job creation.  We … look forward to working with you to pass TPA early this year.”

Congressman Guinta cast the deciding vote for fast track for TPP, which gave President Obama sole authority to negotiate and forced Congress to only be allowed to vote “Yes” or “No” on the whole package, with no opportunity to amend.

In response to Guinta’s deception, Carol Shea-Porter released the following statement:

“While Frank Guinta deceives voters in whatever way he thinks will save his campaign, I have always been steadfast in my opposition to both TPA and TPP. I do believe in trade, but it needs to be fair trade. The TPP does not meet that standard. The TPA took away legislators’ ability to impact or change anything in the trade agreement, which I believe gives too much power to the Executive Branch.”

Carol Shea-Porter Files For Congress, Connects GOP Opponents To Trump’s Racist Remarks

Carol Shea Porter Filing 2016

Concord, New Hampshire–  Today, former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, joined by her husband and supporters, filed as a candidate for Congress in the First Congressional District.  She released the following statement.

“I am running for the United States House of Representatives. During my three terms serving the good people of New Hampshire’s First District, I always worked for all of our citizens, and I never forgot that public office is a public trust.

I have spent all of my working life serving others, and in Congress, I was proud to pass legislation to help active duty soldiers and veterans, small business, working men and women, senior citizens, and students.

But we still have many challenges. Congress needs to pass policies that will strengthen the economy, help America’s small businesses to grow, and help manufacturers to compete and keep jobs here by making products in America. We need to raise the minimum wage, support our schools, and make college affordable again. Families need quality child care and family friendly polices, and this country needs to address our health challenges, including addiction, mental illness, and other pressing problems. Congress needs to protect Social Security and Medicare and other programs that our most vulnerable rely on, and we all need clean air and water and a safe environment. And as we work on all of this, we also need laws that honor and respect all of our people and provide equal protection.

I am ready to return to Congress to work on these challenges. And once again, I am refusing corporate PAC and DC lobbyist money, because I believe we need to get the money out of politics. I have supported and will continue to advocate for a Constitutional Amendment to help do that.

As I have said, my parents worked hard and achieved the American dream and so have I. I am running again because I believe we must keep America the land of opportunity and fairness for your family and mine.”

Shea-Porter took no time in connecting her Republican opponents to the racist Republican nominee Donald Trump saying that their silence shows “tacit approval and moral failure.”

In a recent press release the Shea-Porter campaign said:

It is now too late for Republican NH-01 Congressional candidates Rich Ashooh and Frank Guinta to pretend that they have moral principles that trump politics. They have a racist Presidential candidate who has been spewing hate everywhere against so many people, and they are either cowering in fear, unwilling to follow other Republicans who have spoken out, or they agree with Trump. We don’t know, because both men refuse to say, but New Hampshire knows they have failed a critical test of moral leadership, and it is now too late to fake outrage at these hateful outbursts.

Rich Ashooh, who recently claimed to NH1 that he believed principles matter more than party, says he will support the presidential nominee, and refuses to denounce Trump’s racist comments. Perhaps he should read Thomas Friedman’s essay calling him and others out: “And we know just how little they are attached to any principles, …being so willing to throw their support behind a presidential candidate whom they know is utterly ignorant of policy, has done no homework, has engaged in racist attacks on a sitting judge, has mocked a disabled reporter, has impugned an entire religious community, and has tossed off ignorant proposals for walls, for letting allies go it alone and go nuclear and for overturning trade treaties, rules of war and nuclear agreements in ways that would be wildly destabilizing if he took office.”

When it comes to Frank Guinta…well, New Hampshire already knows about his principles. He’s all in for Trump.

Naomi Andrews, spokeswoman for former Congresswoman and 2016 Candidate Carol Shea-Porter, said: “Throughout the campaign, Donald Trump has made abhorrent comments that do not reflect New Hampshire values. Frank Guinta and Rich Ashooh have remained silent on Trump’s ugly, racist attacks, which denotes tacit approval. It is too late for them to pretend they have moral principles that trump politics. Since they wouldn’t tell Trump to stop his attacks on those with disabilities, on people’s religion, on their race or ethnic background, on women or other groups he tries to bully, NH citizens now know that they would not be able to count on either of them to show moral leadership in Congress.”

Guinta Signs Norquist’s Anti-Tax Pledge Showing His True TEA Party Allegiance

Guinta 2010 – 2 (Image by Jason Meserve)

Guinta once again signs Washington Lobbyist Grover Norquist’s Pledge.
What will Ashooh do-sign it for a second time or stand up for Granite Staters?

Rochester, New Hampshire – Yesterday, Frank Guinta once again surrendered New Hampshire citizens’ rights to representation by signing Washington lobbyist Grover Norquist’s tax pledge.

CBS News had this to say about Norquist: “He is not a member of Congress, nor the holder of any public office. He’s a lobbyist and a conservative activist named Grover Norquist, who over the years has gotten virtually every Republican congressman and Senator to sign an oath called, “The Pledge.”

Mr. Norquist claims the federal government does nothing good with our money, and it should be shrunk to the size that it “could be drowned in the bathtub.” It’s laughable since Mr. Guinta has been on a government payroll for most of his career.

Mr. Ashooh has also received his paycheck from tax-payer money for most of his career. He was on the federal government payroll as a staffer for right wing Senator Gordon Humphrey, and then for former Senator Warren Rudman.  Mr. Ashooh then lobbied Congress for federal dollars for defense contracts, so he clearly understands that the federal government has a responsibility for security and also creates jobs. Does Ashooh also want to destroy the federal government and end jobs for the people it employs?

Mr. Ashooh is a tea partier who has said he would join the Tea Party Caucus if elected. Now, NH voters want to know if he will sign allegiance again to Norquist.

Naomi Andrews, spokeswoman for former Congresswoman and 2016 Candidate Carol Shea-Porter, said,  “Tea Partier Frank Guinta’s re-signing the Norquist pledge is no surprise. His Republican opponent, Mr. Ashooh,  who has also signed the pledge before and has said he would join the Tea Party Caucus, can’t stay silent. He needs to say if he will once again bow to Washington lobbyist Norquist and surrender NH citizens’ rights to representation.  New Hampshire voters deserve an answer—what will Ashooh do?”

Campaign Finance Violations Result In Vastly Different Penalties

Congressman Guinta gets a $15,000 fine while Congressman Bera’s father faces 30 months in prison.

Guinta Is A Damned Liar

Image from the front page of the Union Leader May 15, 2015

We already know that Congressman Frank Guinta is, as the Union Leader put it, “a damned liar,” for lying about violating campaign finance laws.

For years Guinta denied any wrongdoing in the $355,000 loan he gave to his campaign. Last year, we found out that Guinta had violated campaign finance regulations and that Guinta and the FEC had settled the dispute. Guinta was forced to pay the money back and pay a minuscule fine.

Many people were outraged that the FEC did not come down harder on Guinta for his FEC violations, though his credibility is now completely shot.

The FEC rules are pretty clear but penalties vary.

For example, Babual Bera, father of Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA) funneled $225,000 to Rep Bera’s campaign in a flagrant violation of FEC campaign donations limits.

According to the LA Times, Babual Bera convinced others to donate to his son’s campaign and then repaid them for their maximum legal contribution.

“Prosecutors said there were more than 130 instances of improper campaign contributions reported from approximately 90 people. Bera’s father repaid at least portions of those donations, and investigators said that it’s possible even more money was donated illegally to the congressman’s early campaigns.”

Babual Bera is set to be sentenced in August and the federal prosecutors are recommending 30 months in jail.

This is where penalties vary. Bera is facing the possibility of 30 months in federal prison while Congressman Guinta got off for his illegal $355,000 violation with a $15,000 fine.

The cases are not exactly the same, Bera’s father acted alone and repaid donors with his own money, while Guinta got a massive loan from this parents and donated the money directly to his own campaign, but there is a vast difference in penalties.

Guinta got off with a slap on the wrist years after his violation won him a seat in Congress. Bera’s father is facing years behind bars.

Why did Guinta not face jail time for his offenses? Why did Bera not get off with a minor fine?

Unfortunately the Constitution does not allow the FEC to bar those who violate finance laws from public office. If you cheat you should not be allowed to represent the people ever again. Short of that, stiffer penalties than the $15,000 Guinta received is necessary to stop corrupt politicians from trying to cheat the system.
