The NH AFL-CIO Endorses Mark MacKenzie For Congress In NH’s 1st District

Today the New Hampshire AFL-CIO Executive Council is pleased to announce its endorsement of its former President, Mark Mackenzie in his race to succeed Representative Carol Shea-Porter in New Hampshire first Congressional District.

“Mark Mackenzie served as President of the New Hampshire AFL-CIO for twenty-five years. During his tenure he fought to provide opportunities for working families across New England. Former President Mackenzie spent twenty years fighting fires and protecting the Greater-Manchester community. When Mark was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives, organized labor gained an invaluable asset in the legislature. The New Hampshire AFL-CIO Executive Council knows that Mark Mackenzie will go to Washington and use his experience as a union member to fight for the betterment of all working families,” wrote the NH AFL-CIO in their endorsement announcement.

The Executive Council is proud to endorse Representative Mark Mackenzie in his campaign for Congress. His proven leadership is what the working people of New Hampshire deserve.

“I am proud to have this endorsement,” said MacKenzie. “the AFL-CIO has a long history of standing up for all working people and that is why I want to go to Washington. It is good to know that the labor movement understands how important it is to have a working person win this race. This really is a campaign about what all of us can do together to change the direction of our country.”

“I spent over 25 years fighting fires in Manchester”, continued MacKenzie “and I always went into a fire knowing that my sisters and brothers had my back. That’s what this endorsement means to me – the working people of NH have my back and together we are going to have a strong, sucessful campaign.”

“I promise to take on the powers that be – to fight for Medicare for all, for good jobs in a clean environment, and for an end to economic inequality.  I know that the working women and men in NH are just as concerned as I am about the continual rise in income inequality, the skyrocketing costs of health care and college debt. I know that my lifelong commitment to these issues is why the NH AFL-CIO has chosen to endorse me.  Together we are going to win this election.”

The NH AFL-CIO represents over 20,000 members and their families in New Hampshire.

Mark MacKenzie is a member of Local 856 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) for over forty years and was the President of the NH AFL-CIO for 25 years.  He is currently a state representative from Manchester.

16 Term Alderman From Manchester Endorses Shea-Porter For Congress

Former Manchester Alderman William Cashin Endorses
Carol Shea-Porter for Congress

Manchester, NH— Today, highly respected former Manchester Alderman William Cashin endorsed Carol Shea-Porter for Congress. William B. Cashin served a record 16 consecutive terms as an alderman representing Wards 10 and 11 on the Manchester Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The William B. Cashin Senior Activity Center is named in his honor.

“I’ve always admired former Alderman Bill Cashin’s commitment to public service, and he has a long and impressive record of service to the people of Manchester.  I’m truly honored to have his endorsement, and I thank him,” said Carol Shea-Porter.

Full endorsement:

I am endorsing Carol Shea-Porter because I believe she is the best candidate to represent Manchester in the U.S. House of Representatives. In this election, it is vital that voters send to Congress candidates whom we are assured will help and defend ordinary people.

When I say ordinary, I am not talking about people who are average or common, but people like you and me, people without great wealth or connections, people for whom the “System” is something not to be manipulated. I speak of people who are part of a community that helps them realize their hopes and dreams if they play by the rules and work hard.

The people I served as alderman for 32 years were people who gave back to the community more than they took, but who relied on the community they built with their family, friends and neighbors for help if the chips were down. These are people whose labor and their commitment to faith, duty and love of country made the United States the greatest nation on earth, and New Hampshire the best state to live in.

I am voting for Carol Shea-Porter as her record shows she is committed to defending two of the most vulnerable groups of Americans, senior citizens and veterans. I am both a senior and a vet.

The fight to ensure that seniors can enjoy their twilight years with security and dignity has been, and unfortunately still is, challenging and difficult, given the long history of opposition of Republicans to Social Security. This is a fight that has spanned my entire lifetime, the Social Security Administration having been established by Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is a fight that was and is lead by Democrats like Carol Shea-Porter.

New Hampshire is the only state lacking a full-service veteran’s hospital. Over a decade ago, when Republicans controlled the New Hampshire Congressional delegation, the Manchester Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) suffered cutbacks and lost its status as a hospital. The staffing levels of the facility deteriorated as Republicans during the George W. Bush Administration pushed for privatization.

The attempted privatization of veteran’s health care services was defeated. After the election of Carol Shea-Porter and fellow Democrat Paul Hodes to the House in 2006, and with Democrat Jeanne Shaheen elected to the Senate in 2008, the situation at the Manchester VAMC improved. Over 160 staff were added.

Unfortunately, with the return of Republican control of the Senate and the return of Frank Guinta to the House, there are again problems at the VAMC. I believe that returning Carol Shea-Porter to the House and electing Maggie Hassan to the Senate are necessary to ensure that the Manchester VAMC not only is preserved, but will once again become a full-service hospital, improving care for New Hampshire’s vets.

I also am voting for Carol Shea-Porter as I have her commitment that, in Congress, she will do all she can to help Manchester, the largest city in the Granite State, address its problems. When I began my career as an alderman, Manchester was in a severe economic decline due to the loss of manufacturing jobs caused by the closing of the textile mills and shoe manufacturers. In the generation that followed, I worked with many dedicated individuals to reverse that decline.

Our efforts grew stronger due to the tenacious support of the community, those ordinary people who have always been the backbone of the Democratic Party. After many long years, we achieved a great success. The Queen City, which once seemed to have a bleak future, regularly was named as one of the Top Ten cities to live in, in the United States.

Our fight for Manchester’s future was a vision that attracted the support of good people of both parties, as does so many programs created and shepherded by Democrats, like Social Security and Medicare. Those vital programs enjoying broad, bipartisan support among ordinary people again are under threat. And so is the economic future of Manchester.

It is sad to see the progress that came through hard work and the love of this great city jeopardized.

Manchester recovered from the economic decline caused by the loss of manufacturing jobs, and the Queen City flourished. But in recent years, Manchester has been plagued by difficulties foreshadowing a new economic decline, caused by the mismanagement or municipal economic policy by two Republican mayors.

This cycle, which is marked by the erosion of Manchester’s ability to attract manufacturers, began under then-Mayor Frank Guinta. Carol Shea-Porter is committed to strengthening the economic base of Manchester and New Hampshire through economic policies that will make our city and state attractive to companies representing the 21st Century economy, with their innovative products and services and high-paying jobs.

I ask you to vote for Carol Shea-Porter as the only candidate with a proven record of defending and helping seniors and veterans, and because of her commitment to the economic development of Manchester and New Hampshire.

Thank you.

William B. Cashin,

Manchester, New Hampshire

Kuster Receives Endorsement of the Alliance for Retired Americans

Alliance For Retired Americans(Concord, NH) – Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) has received the endorsement of the Alliance for Retired Americans, a group that represents more than 4.3 million retirees nationwide, including 11,220 members in New Hampshire. The group endorsed Kuster for reelection to New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District because of her strong commitment to preserving Social Security and Medicare and her dedication to improving the lives of older and retired Americans.

“It’s an honor receive the endorsement of the Alliance for Retired Americans,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “Having cared for my mother, who had Alzheimer’s, I understand the importance of ensuring older Americans are able to retire and live their later years in dignity and with security. That’s why I’ll always fight to protect Social Security and Medicare, two of the most successful safety net programs in our nation’s history. As a member of Congress, I’m committed to strengthening these programs and working to increase access to healthcare and improve retirement for seniors in New Hampshire and across the country.”

In their endorsement, the Alliance for Retired Americans wrote, “Your positions demonstrate a strong commitment to improve the quality of life for older Americans. Your leadership on issues such as preserving and protecting Social Security and Medicare from privatization and benefits cuts ensures these programs will be around for current and future generations. In addition, our members support your candidacy because of your belief in the need to provide more affordable health care for older Americans, as well as the need for stronger retirement and pension security, and quality long term care.”

Maggie Hassan Picks Up Endorsement From Republican Foreign Affairs Expert

Former NH GOP Spokesman, McCain Campaign Staffer and Russia Expert Endorses Governor Maggie Hassan for Senate

CONCORD – Today, in a Concord Monitor op-ed, Russia and NATO expert and former New Hampshire Republican Party spokesman Mark Lenzi endorsed Governor Maggie Hassan for United States Senate.

“As a lifelong Republican who previously served as Spokesman for the New Hampshire Republican Party, I cast my vote six years ago for Kelly Ayotte for Senate – but I cannot do so again,” said Mark Lenzi. “I want my Senator in Washington to be independent in their thinking and not beholden to a political party whether that be on foreign or domestic policy. Maggie Hassan will be that Senator, and her national security plan combined with her executive and bipartisan leadership experience will have a profound and positive impact on Granite Staters’ safety and security for decades to come.”

“I am proud to have the support of Mark Lenzi and leaders across the political spectrum for my campaign to represent New Hampshire in the United States Senate,” said Governor Maggie Hassan. “As Governor it has been my top priority to ensure that New Hampshire is safe and secure, and America’s safety will always be my top priority as Senator. In the Senate, I will continue working across party lines to protect our communities and advance America’s security.”

When it comes to national security, Hassan is best

By Mark Lenzi

… in both strategic direction and in details, Governor Hassan’s national security and defense plan is infinitely better and more thought out than Senator Ayotte’s. And before you think I am just some partisan Democrat saying this, consider that I have spent my entire adult life working on U.S. national security issues in more than fifty countries and am former Spokesman for the New Hampshire Republican Party.

While I recognize that most Granite Staters will not parse the details of each candidate’s national security and foreign policy plan or compare them side by side like I have, most New Hampshire voters understand that leadership qualities and executive experience are the two most important criteria in being able to legislate national security issues effectively. This is precisely why Governor Hassan will be best for New Hampshire on national security, because she has worked from an executive level with the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and local police departments to keep Granite Staters safe by enhancing New Hampshire’s Information and Analysis Center, bolstering safety plans at public schools and instituting specialized active shooter courses and trainings for police departments across the state.

… While Governor Hassan’s foreign policy priorities have received scant attention in a campaign where Senator Ayotte’s changing positions on supporting Donald Trump has unfortunately dominated media coverage at the expense of a real foreign policy discussion, Governor Hassan’s national security plan combined with her executive and bipartisan leadership experience will have a profound and positive impact on Granite Staters’ safety and security for decades to come.

Veterans And Military Families For Progress Endorses Governor Maggie Hassan For US Senate

vmfp-logoWashington, DC- Veterans and Military Families for Progress enthusiastically and proudly endorses Governor Maggie Hassan in the upcoming New Hampshire United States Senate Election.

Founded in 2005, VMFP is dedicated to ensuring that the rights and needs of veterans, active- duty service members (including national guard and reservists), and their families are understood by the American public, endorsed by our elected officials, and protected by legislation, regulation, and public policy initiatives.

Governor Hassan has demonstrated an extraordinarily strong commitment and deep understanding of the issues that affect America’s veterans. Throughout her career Maggie Hassan has been a strong supporter of our nation’s veterans and active armed forces. Governor Hassan understands the need for military members who are reintegrating into the civilian job market to have access to educational benefits and job training opportunities. Her strong support for consumer protection regulations has been especially important for veterans and their families. Ms Hassan’s public support for priority funding of the Veterans Administration and her declared determination to provide for the establishment of a national veterans and military family policy give veterans and their families hope that at long last a Senator will vote in such a way as to keep faith with those who have served and sacrificed.

Maggie Hassan, whose father was a World War II “Battle of the Bulge” veteran, has a deep and personal understanding of the issues veterans and their families confront. Her decision to support legislation for improving the treatment of veterans with traumatic brain injuries and PTSD, and her deep understanding of the need for providing and guaranteeing full health coverage for National Guard and Reserve personnel, demonstrate that she is a candidate who has the character and courage and personal family experience to do what is right for those in service to our country. We feel that veterans, active duty, military families, and in fact, all people of New Hampshire will be well-served with Governor Hassan’s election to the US Senate and thus ensure that America remains strong in national defense and in fighting terrorism.

Veterans and Military Families for Progress is a 501(c)(4) non-partisan, not-for-profit Veterans’ organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. It is a 21st Century organization made up of members located throughout the country, and from across the breadth of rank and military services, who served, are serving, or are family members of those who have heeded the call to serve their country in the U.S. military.

Veterans and Military Families for Progress Endorses Carol Shea-Porter

vmfp-logoRochester, NH— Today, Carol Shea-Porter received the endorsement of Veterans and Military Families for Progress (VMFP). Founded in 2005, VMFP works to ensure that the needs of veterans, active duty service members, and their families are understood by the American public and supported by legislation, regulations, and public policy initiatives.

“Former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter is a strong supporter of our nation’s veterans and active armed forces. While serving in the House of Representatives on the Armed Services Committee Carol Shea-Porter clearly demonstrated her determination to work on behalf of our nation’s active military and veterans by supporting legislation that would benefit all of our active military men and women and veterans. Ms. Shea-Porter’s strong commitment to the issues that are critical to veterans, those serving now, and their families is unsurpassed. Her public support for priority funding of the Veterans Administration and her declared determination to provide for the establishment of a national veterans and military family policy give all veterans and their families, especially those who are living in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, hope that they will continue to have a Congresswoman who will vote in such a way as to keep faith with those who have served and sacrificed. We feel that veterans, active duty, military families, and in fact, all people of New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District will be well-served with Carol Shea-Porter as their representative by ensuring that America remains strong in national defense and in fighting terrorism,” said VMFP in their endorsement of Carol Shea-Porter.

As the daughter of a World War II veteran and the spouse of a veteran, Carol Shea-Porter has a deep and personal understanding of the commitment and sacrifice our service members make every day. She successfully expanded access to services at the VA in Manchester, voted for the Choice Card for vets, and was an original cosponsor of the Post-9/11 GI Bill. She’s been instrumental in passing legislation to create jobs for veterans and ensure that they get the benefits they’ve earned.

“I am honored to have earned the support of Veterans and Military Families for Progress. I’m a former military spouse, and I’m proud of my husband’s service. The problems at the VA must be fixed and we must ensure that our veterans have access to care and get the benefits they’ve earned. I was proud to vote for increased funding for medical care, PTSD research, and claims processors because veterans should never have to wait for care or the benefits they deserve. I was also proud to be an original cosponsor of the Post-9/11 GI Bill of Rights to ensure that veterans returning home from their service have jobs and educational opportunities,” said Carol Shea-Porter.

Shea-Porter Garners Endorsement From Americans For Responsible Gun Solutions PAC

Congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ Organization, Americans for Responsible Gun Solutions, Endorses Carol Shea-Porter for Congress

Rochester, NH— Today, Americans for Responsible Solutions, the organization founded by Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, endorsed Carol Shea-Porter.  Americans for Responsible Solutions advocates for common sense solutions to reduce gun violence while protecting responsible gun ownership.

“Carol Shea-Porter knows that with freedom comes responsibility, and that we can do more to keep guns out of the wrong hands while protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners like us. I am proud to support Carol, my former colleague and a leader who is committed to standing up to the Washington gun lobby and to bipartisan change that will help prevent gun tragedies. In Congress, Carol will be a tireless champion for the vocal majority of Granite Staters who are calling on their elected leaders to do more to reduce gun violence and make our communities safer,” said Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Unlike Congressman Guinta, Carol Shea-Porter supports universal background checks to make it easier to stop criminals or terrorists from purchasing firearms. She believes that stalkers who have threatened or abused their partners and are under a restraining order shouldn’t be allowed to purchase a firearm. Carol knows that if someone is too dangerous to fly, that person shouldn’t be allowed to purchase a gun.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Americans for Responsible Solutions. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly have done incredible work advocating for gun violence prevention measures,” said Carol Shea-Porter. “Sadly, it’s far too easy for criminals, terrorists, and individuals who are a danger to themselves or others to buy guns. Congress needs to pass common sense legislation that protects people’s Second Amendment rights while helping our law enforcement agencies keep illegal weapons off the black market and out of the hands of criminals.”

Progressive Change Campaign Committee Endorses Carol Shea-Porter (NH-1) For Congress

With Warren Wing Rising, Shea-Porter to Continue Championing Campaign Finance Reform, Debt-Free College, and Expanding Social Security

Today, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee is announcing its endorsement of Carol Shea-Porter (NH-1) for Congress. Shea-Porter is in a rematch with her 2014 challenger — in a district that Democrats must carry to win a progressive mandate in 2017. PCCC also endorsed two other bold, progressive congressional candidates Rep. Rick Nolan (MN-8) and Rep. Mike Honda (CA-17).

“Carol Shea-Porter has fought tirelessly against corporate interests on the behalf of working families as one of the earliest supporters of debt-free college. We’re committed to marshalling progressive resources to send Shea-Porter and other Elizabeth Warren wing Democrats back to Congress to represent the bold, economic populist views that resonate with most Americans. We need their leadership in Congress in 2017 and beyond,” said PCCC co-founder Stephanie Taylor.

After hearing the news Carol Shea-Porter released the following statement:

“Stephanie, Adam, and the entire team at the Progressive Change Campaign Committee have been at the forefront of progressive change across this country, and I have been very honored to receive their endorsement each cycle. My staff and I and our grassroots volunteers are excited and grateful to have the support of the PCCC grassroots activists community, who carry our progressive message to so many more voters! Thank you so much for the help!”

Shea-Porter is running again for the seat she won in 2006, 2008 and 2012. Her time in Congress was marked by her strong support for progressive priorities like the Affordable Care Act and clean energy, and her opposition to fast-tracking trade deals like TPP.

Latest polls show Shea-Porter beating incumbent Republican Rep. Frank Guinta, 48-29 percent. Guinta, one of the top 10 most vulnerable incumbents, was the subject of probably the shortest editorial in the history of the New Hampshire Union Leader paper: “Frank Guinta is a damned liar.”

The PCCC will support the candidates with fundraising, volunteers, and staff support. The grassroots organization has raised over $7 million for progressive candidates and committees since its founding in 2009. The PCCC has over 1 million members nationwide, including over 20,000 in Minnesota, over 7,000 in New Hampshire, and over 143,000 in California.

Other candidates PCCC has endorsed this cycle include: Russ Feingold (WI-Sen), Zephyr Teachout (NY-19), Pramila Jayapal, (WA-7), Angie Craig (MN-2), Jamie Raskin (MD-8), and Colin Van Ostern (NH-Gov).

Colin Van Ostern Receives Backing of Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund PAC

Planned ParenthoodGranite State’s Largest and Most Recognized Women’s Health Organization Cites Van Ostern’s Record of Results, Need for Proven Champion in Governor’s Office

MANCHESTER, NH—Standing in front of Manchester’s Planned Parenthood Health Center, with exactly one month until primary voters head to the polls, Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund (PPNHAF) PAC today endorsed Colin Van Ostern in the race for Governor. Flanked by dozens of advocates holding pink signs reading “Colin Will Protect Women’s Health,” PPNHAF PAC highlighted the critical importance of electing another chief executive who is not only a supporter, but a proven champion of women’s health.

“Through his statements, votes, and grassroots actions, Colin Van Ostern has made it clear access to safe and legal abortion and the essential health services Planned Parenthood provides will be safeguarded under his administration,” said Jennifer Frizzell, Chair, Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund PAC. “This year, 16 bills took aim at women’s health care access and—despite overwhelming public support for their services—Planned Parenthood of Northern New England was defunded for 11 months due to recent Executive Council actions. In this political climate, our next Governor must be a proven and committed advocate of women’s health care.”

“I am grateful to have the Planned Parenthood PAC standing with us in our campaign to keep New Hampshire moving forward,” said Executive Councilor and Democratic candidate for Governor, Colin Van Ostern. “New Hampshire has a proud tradition of protecting access to safe and legal abortion and as Governor, I will always uphold that basic principle. From expanding Medicaid to nearly 50,000 Granite Staters, to restoring funding for family planning services, New Hampshire has made real progress, but this all hangs in the balance with our next governor. In this election, it’s so important that we keep our state moving forward by making Medicaid expansion permanent, overcoming the opioid crisis, and no longer treating birth control and cancer screenings like an election-year political football.”

Although Democratic primary voters are fortunate to have a choice between three outspoken supporters of abortion and women’s health care access, only Colin has a proactive record of protecting health care access for low-income women and families of New Hampshire.

In 2011, the Executive Council, a traditionally apolitical body, voted to defund Planned Parenthood for the first time in its history. Colin, then a business man and private citizen, successfully challenged the councilman who spearheaded the radical vote to defund Planned Parenthood.

Since Colin’s election to the Executive Council, Planned Parenthood’s contract has been up for debate three times. In the face of these threats, Colin has stood strong with Planned Parenthood, not only arguing before the council, but also waging a strong grassroots campaign to ensure his constituents knew exactly what sort of attacks were happening.

“With continuous threats to women’s health care winding through the Legislature and Medicaid Expansion due to sunset during the next Administration, this election has high stakes for women and low-income families of New Hampshire,” said The Honorable Iris Estabrook, former State Senator (D-Barrington), PPNHAF PAC Board Member . “Electing Colin van Ostern to be New Hampshire’s next Governor will ensure the 12,000 women, men, and families that rely on Planned Parenthood for preventive services like STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings, and birth control are protected.”

“Colin has a record of bringing people together to protect to women’s health care, and he is committed to inclusiveness. That’s why Colin has earned the support of a majority of New Hampshire state elected officials legislators. He’s fighting for everyone, not just those at the top,” said Representative Caroletta Alicea (D-Boscawen).

“As I embark on a health care career in New Hampshire, I want our next Governor to be an advocate for women, for Planned Parenthood health care services, and for the next generation of Granite State families,” said Maggie Rice, a recent Keene State College graduate and patient advocate at PPNNE’s Manchester Health Center. “I want someone in the corner office who will not only speak up for me, but truly understands the vital role Planned Parenthood health centers serve in our communities—from providing access to birth control and cancer screenings to breast exams and LGBT services.”

Planned Parenthood NH Action Fund played an active and important role in expanding Medicaid coverage to low-income Granite Staters through advocacy and enrollment efforts. Medicaid Expansion has created the opportunity for more than 50,000 Granite Staters—the majority of whom are low income women—to connect to care and lead healthier lives. As Governor, Colin will fight for solutions to make Medicaid Expansion a permanent and lasting safety net for our state’s most vulnerable.

Colin was the first gubernatorial candidate to release a plan to improve economic opportunity and safeguard health care access for women and low-income families. As Governor, Colin will fight to increase in the state minimum wage; expand full day kindergarten in every community; invest in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) programs for young women and girls; and promote meaningful family leave policies which will allow for more Granite Staters to succeed both at work and home. Colin will also fight to restore state matching funds for domestic violence services and reduce sexual violence on our college campuses by expanding domestic and sexual violence prevention initiatives.
