2016 Fiscal Revues Reveals $160 Million Surplus But What Will Happen Next Is Crucial

Today, the Department of Administrative Services released the 2016 NH Fiscal Report that show a whopping $160 million dollar surplus.

“Thanks to a strengthening economy, our work across party lines to develop a fiscally responsible budget and Senator Hassan’s strong leadership as Governor, we finished Fiscal Year 2016 with a surplus of almost $160 million. With this strong surplus, we were able to put an additional $70 million into our Rainy Day Fund- strengthening it to the highest level in recorded history. As our state’s fiscal outlook continues to strengthen, Senate Democrats remain committed to supporting the economic priorities that are critical to the success of our people, our businesses, and our state,” said Senate Democratic Leader Jeff Woodburn.

“The strong surplus of nearly $160 million and historic level of the State’s Rainy Day Fund is yet another clear sign of Senator Hassan’s strong leadership and success as Governor. Regardless of what the Republican Party tries to say about the state’s fiscal health, Granite Staters know that Senator Hassan’s leadership led to real results for the State of New Hampshire. To build on that progress, Republicans in Concord should ditch failed policies like ‘right-to-work for less’ and join their Democratic colleagues on focusing on the real issues that matter to the people of New Hampshire and will keep our economy moving forward,” said Ray Buckley, Chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party.

For the people of New Hampshire this is good news.  It shows that programs like the NH Health Protection Program did not bankrupt the state as some claimed.  We have also filled up our rainy day fund. This will make this years budget fight even more interesting.

Will the legislature cut revenue sources or will they opt to invest in our future?

For example, today, Senator Bette Laskey (D-Nashua) introduced a new bill (SB 100) to appropriate $4 million to the Department of Transportation for the project development phase of the New Hampshire capital rail corridor project.

“The citizens and businesses of New Hampshire know that bringing commuter rail to this state will generate economic growth for decades to come and make New Hampshire a more accessible and attractive destination for families and investors,” said Senator Lasky, prime sponsor of SB 100. “With the support of businesses, workers and families, this project should be a priority investment of this legislature.”

“Commuter rail offers a modern, safe, transportation infrastructure that not only bridges the gap between employers and their need for an educated workforce, but also helps attract and keep young people in our state to drive future growth. This is not a partisan or ideological issue – it is a win-win that is supported by both Republicans and Democrats; business leaders, and working families. Given the significant economic benefits of bringing commuter rail to New Hampshire, I urge my colleagues on the Senate Finance Committee to support this legislation,” Laskey added.

With a $90 million dollar surplus, after taking money out for the rainy day fund, can we finally agree that the funds are there to push for expanded rail service to New Hampshire.

What about our broken down roads and bridges?  Will the legislature finally put some serious money to repair the hundred red listed bridges in the state?

What about our schools? Will the legislature put some much needed funds to update any of the state public schools?  Will they put more money towards the state’s university system and the community college system of NH?  The State of NH is dead last in state spending on our state universities which is also why we have the highest in-state tuition in the country.

Hopefully they will choose to make some serious investments in our state’s infrastructure and spend more on education funding.

hassan-psny-metal-trade2Metal Trades Council President: “Governor Hassan is a true champion of the shipyard and its workers, and we know she’ll be our voice in the Senate”

Governor Hassan: “The Shipyard plays such a critical role in our national security and in the Senate, I’ll fight tirelessly to strengthen the Shipyard”

PORTSMOUTH – Today, Governor Maggie Hassan accepted the Metal Trades Council endorsement – the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s largest trade union. Governor Hassan received the endorsement this afternoon in Portsmouth.

“I’m tremendously proud to have the endorsement of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s Metal Trades Council,” said Governor Maggie Hassan. “Thanks to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of its workers, the Shipyard continues to set the gold standard for productivity. The Shipyard plays such an important role in both national security and the Seacoast economy. In the Senate, I’ll work to strengthen the Shipyard and I will vigorously fight any attempt to close the facility – including opposing a new Base Closure and Realignment Commission round. I look forward to doing everything within my power to make sure Congress invests in the Shipyard’s workforce and infrastructure, including modernizing and enhancing the efficiency of the Shipyard’s facilities and preparing the workers of tomorrow through STEM education programs.

“Governor Hassan is a true champion of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and its workers, and we know she’ll be our voice in the Senate,” said Metal Trades Council President Mark Vigliotta. “From her time as a State Senator to the Governor’s office, Maggie Hassan has delivered results for New Hampshire’s workers and there’s nobody better prepared to stand up for us in Washington.”

hassan-psny-metal-trade1“I’ve seen firsthand Governor Maggie Hassan’s commitment to protecting the Shipyard and it’s workers,” said former Metal Trades Council President Paul O’Connor. “To build on the progress she’s been able to make by bringing people together here in New Hampshire, we need to send Governor Hassan to the Senate. I know that Governor Hassan will always fight to keep the Shipyard open and to protect our workforce, and Washington could use her commonsense and commitment to bipartisan problem solving.”

As a State Senator, Maggie Hassan helped turn back a misguided effort to close the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She sponsored– and secured unanimous bipartisan passage of – legislation providing state funding for the Seacoast Shipyard Association, which played a pivotal role in saving the Shipyard from the Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC).

As Governor, she has fought for critical Shipyard priorities including helping secure funding to replace the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, which provides a crucial rail link to the Shipyard. In order to boost the economy and strengthen the economic security of thousands of Granite Staters, And she has worked to expand access to Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) programs in our schools to ensure a 21st century workforce pipeline for all industries in New Hampshire.

In the United States Senate, she will fight any attempt to close the facility – including opposing a new Base Closure and Realignment Commission round. And she will also work to fully reverse sequestration and end the threat of uncertain budgets and furloughs. She will support new barracks and dry dock refurbishment, ensure that the Shipyard’s personnel get full per diems when they travel, fully fund the submarine fleet that the Navy says it needs, and look for new ways to diversify and expand the Shipyard’s mission going forward.

Maggie Hassan In New Ad: The Choice Is Clear

Maggie for NH Announces New TV Ad, Lays Out The Clear Choice Granite Staters Face in This Election

CONCORD – Today, Maggie for New Hampshire announced a new television ad, “The Choice,” in which Governor Maggie Hassan lays out the clear choice Granite Staters face on November 8th.

“New Hampshire has a very clear choice,” says Governor Hassan in the new ad. “Do we keep going with a Senator who repeatedly votes with the corporate special interests? Or a new Senator who sides with the people of New Hampshire?”

“My focus has always been on creating opportunity for working families, making college and job training more affordable, lowering prescription drug costs, and always protecting a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions,” the Governor adds. “These are my priorities, why I approve this message, and why I respectfully ask for your vote.”

The 30 second ad will run on New Hampshire and Boston broadcast stations as well as on cable and online as part of our ongoing seven-figure ad buy.

Governor Maggie Hassan Campaigns with Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Outlining the Stakes for this Election

hassan-and-shaheen-campaign1CONCORD – Over the past two days, Governor Hassan was joined by Senator Shaheen at campaign stops across New Hampshire to outline the stakes for this election and encourage Granite Staters to get out and vote on November 8th.

“It was great to travel the state with Senator Shaheen and talk to Granite Staters who are excited to get out and vote on November 8.” said Governor Maggie Hassan. “New Hampshire needs two Senators who will fight for the middle class, strengthen Social Security and Medicare, and protect a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, not a Senator who supports the agenda of corporate special interests like the Koch Brothers, as Senator Ayotte has done nearly 90 percent of the time in her first four years in office.”

hassan-and-shaheen-campaign2Senator Shaheen joined Governor Hassan in highlighting the work the Governor has done at the state level to keep New Hampshire moving in the right direction, and said she “can’t wait until [her] vote doesn’t get canceled out” by Kelly Ayotte. As Governor, Maggie Hassan signed two fiscally responsible balanced budgets without an income or sales tax, froze in-state tuition for the first time in 25 years and lowered it at community colleges, and is taking a comprehensive approach to combat our heroin and opioid crisis.

The Governor will take this same bipartisan approach to problem-solving to the United States Senate to make progress for New Hampshire families and small businesses. She released her Innovate NH 2.0 economic plan, which outlines her priorities for building on New Hampshire’s economic progress and ensuring that all Granite Staters are equipped to succeed in the changing American economy. The Human Rights Campaign Releases New Ad: “Clinton & Hassan For Equality”

hrc-hassan-clinton-ad-screen-shotNew ad features Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and U.S. Senate candidate Maggie Hassan, staunch equality advocates endorsed by HRC

WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, released a new digital ad in New Hampshire for Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and U.S. Senate candidate Maggie Hassan. With one week until Election Day, the ad highlights for New Hampshire voters the strong pro-equality records of both Secretary Clinton and Governor Hassan and their commitment to fighting for all New Hampshire families.

In “Clinton & Hassan For Equality,” Governor Hassan discusses the importance of ensuring equal rights and protections for all Americans: “New Hampshire has a long tradition of inclusiveness. We all grow stronger together, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The ad also features Secretary Clinton talking about the issues at stake in this election for LGBTQ people and their families: “We’re going to have an election that is truly going to be about fundamental rights: marriage equality, taking on the continuing discrimination against the LGBT community. We’ve got to address the growing crisis of transphobic violence.”

Watch: “Clinton & Hassan For Equality

“With Hillary Clinton in the White House and Maggie Hassan in the Senate, we will have two leaders committed to securing full equality for all Americans,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “New Hampshire voters have a clear choice this election — and by electing Hillary Clinton and Maggie Hassan, they can help ensure our nation continues moving forward.”

Hillary Clinton has embraced the most pro-LGBTQ equality platform of any major presidential candidate in the nation’s history. Governor Hassan has fought for the rights of all citizens to participate fully in the civic and economic life of their communities, working tirelessly as a State Senator to help make New Hampshire one of the first states to pass legislation ensuring access to legal marriage for all. Earlier this year, she made history by signing an executive order extending non-discrimination protections to transgender people in New Hampshire with respect to government employment, contracts, and programs.

Clinton & Hassan For Equality” is part of HRC’s digital campaign targeting pro-equality voters across New Hampshire. With control of the Senate potentially hinging on the outcome of the New Hampshire Senate race, it is critically important that the nearly 40,000 LGBTQ voters in the state and their allies make their voices heard by casting a ballot for Hillary Clinton and Maggie Hassan.

The campaign is part of a larger get-out-the-vote effort aimed at mobilizing 10 million LGBTQ voters nationwide, as well as millions of other pro-equality voters.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.

Paid for by the Human Rights Campaign Equality Votes and not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

Governor Hassan Participates in Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy Forum

Hassan Outlines Priorities to Help the Middle Class Grow and Thrive hassan-at-cffe-forum1MANCHESTER –  Today, Governor Maggie Hassan participated in a forum hosted by the Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy, highlighting her commitment to expanding economic opportunity for all hard-working Granite State families.

“I’m proud of the steps we have taken here in New Hampshire to lay the foundation for inclusive economic growth and to support a thriving middle class,” said Governor Maggie Hassan. “To meet the progress we are making here at home, my Innovate NH 2.0 economic plan outlines the steps I will take to Washington to ensure that all hard-working families have the chance to get ahead and stay ahead. In the Senate, I will fight for priorities to help middle class families make ends meet, including providing a $1,000 tax cut for middle class families, helping families afford child care, and expanding paid family leave.”

hassan-at-cffe-forum2As Governor, Maggie Hassan has worked to increase economic opportunity for hard-working families including by expanding access to health coverage for over 50,000 Granite Staters, signing the New Hampshire Paycheck Fairness Act to help ensure that everyone earns equal pay for equal work, and fighting to restore and increase New Hampshire’s minimum wage. And under Governor Hassan’s leadership, New Hampshire has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, with more people working than at any point in state history.

In her Innovate NH 2.0 economic plan, Governor Hassan outlined the priorities she will take to the Senate to foster business innovation and expand middle class opportunity. As Senator, Maggie will fight to end tax breaks for special interests so that we can help ease the tax burden on the middle class. She will also continue fighting to raise the minimum wage, help families afford child care, expand paid family leave, and ensure equal pay for equal work.

Strong Women Leaders Campaign For Maggie Hassan In Durham

Cecile Richards, Ilyse Hogue, Randi Weingarten, Maggie Hassan at UNH Today: Ayotte and Trump Would Be Disaster for Women

img_8865Durham, New Hampshire – Outlining what is at stake for New Hampshire women and young people in this election, Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL, and Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, joined New Hampshire U.S Senate candidate Governor Maggie Hassan at a Planned Parenthood Action Fund-NARAL membership rally on the University of New Hampshire campus.

The four women highlighted the contrast between Kelly Ayotte’s repeated attacks against women’s health, including her six votes to defund Planned Parenthood and year long support of Donald Trump – who has bragged about groping women and called women “pigs” and “dogs” – and Maggie’s commitment to protecting a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, as well as Maggie’s commitment to making college more affordable and supporting K-12 education.

Statement from Governor Maggie Hassan

“It is an honor to join today with true fighters for women’s health and economic opportunity, and I am grateful for the support of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Here in New Hampshire, I have been proud to stand up for a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions and control her own destiny, including restoring funding for Planned Parenthood at the state-level. But Granite State women and their families deserve better than politicians in Washington like Senator Kelly Ayotte, who has voted six times to defund Planned Parenthood and has consistently blocked women’s access to health care. In the Senate, I will always fight to protect a woman’s right to make her own health decisions and to safely and affordably access health care, and I will stand up to those who want to pull us backward.”

Statement from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund

“New Hampshire’s Senate election is ground zero for women’s health. Kelly Ayotte has shamelessly tried to rewrite her record – hoping New Hampshire voters forget her 6 votes to defund Planned Parenthood and promises to take away no-copay birth control. Ayotte’s year-long support of Donald Trump makes it clear she is willing stand with bullies who insult and demean women rather than standing with New Hampshire women and families. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to stand with women leaders like Maggie Hassan and Hillary Clinton, who support the thousands of New Hampshire women who visit Planned Parenthood health centers, push for debt-free college, and work to make life better for women and families.”

Statement from Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America

“NARAL members and pro-choice voters across New Hampshire are proud to stand with Maggie Hassan in her campaign for Senate. As governor, Maggie has defended each woman’s right to control her own destiny and to access basic reproductive healthcare, including abortion. Maggie is the type of leader who works with both sides to get things done for women and our families, and she will be the leader that New Hampshire deserves in the Senate.”

Statement from Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers

“I was thrilled to join Cecile Richards, Ilyse Hogue and Gov. Maggie Hassan today to get out the vote for Hillary Clinton and Maggie Hassan in New Hampshire. U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte’s tenure has been marked by obstruction rather than problem-solving, and time and time again, she has shown she stands with the Koch brothers, Wall Street and big pharma instead of putting the needs of working families first. As Governor, Maggie Hassan has walked the walk for the people of the Granite State: She lowered tuition costs at community colleges and froze tuition hikes, she expanded healthcare coverage to more than 50,000 people, and she has been a champion for public education so our kids have the chance to succeed. Gov. Hassan’s values are working families’ values—she will always fight to ensure the people’s interests become the public interest.”

Polls show that 73 percent of Granite Staters support access to safe and legal abortion , 66 percent support Planned Parenthood, and a majority of Independent voters are less likely to vote for her because of her votes to defund Planned Parenthood). Ayotte has consistently tried to rewrite her record after consistently finding herself out of step with New Hampshire voters. Ayotte was ridiculed in the media for handing out condoms at one of her events, a stunt at odds with her six votes to defund Planned Parenthood and stated commitment to overturn the Affordable Care Act, which gave 55 million women nationwide access to no-copay birth control.

Hassan Launches New Ad Highlighting Her Strong Leadership And Always Putting People First

New TV Ad Highlights Governor Maggie Hassan’s Focus on Families, Innovation and Education

CONCORD – Today, Maggie for NH released a new TV ad, “Difference,” highlighting the difference Governor Hassan has made in New Hampshire by focusing on families, innovation and education, and how she will bring this same focus to the United States Senate to continue making progress for New Hampshire.

As Governor, Maggie froze in-state tuition at New Hampshire universities for the first time in 25 years and lowered it at community colleges. Governor Hassan also cut taxes for research & development and small businesses and developed the award-winning “Live Free and Start” initiative to support start-up companies and help them launch and grow. And she has supported job training programs to help ensure New Hampshire workers can thrive in the changing American economy.

“In the United States Senate, I will always put New Hampshire families and small businesses before corporate special interests – just as I have as Governor,” said Governor Maggie Hassan. “I know that by rolling up our sleeves and working together across party lines, we can make progress for all Granite Staters and build a future where everyone who works hard can get ahead and stay ahead.”

Governor Hassan announced her Innovate NH 2.0 economic plan, which outlines the policies she will focus on as a United States Senator to foster innovation, support job-creating businesses and expand opportunity for hard-working families. This plan includes proposals to make college more affordable, including working to expand Pell Grant and fighting to achieve debt-free public college for all families. The Governor will also work to lower the cost of prescription drugs by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices and allowing Americans to buy drugs from Canada, which will increase competition.

Shaheen Announces Grant for the Community College System of NH to Increase Access to Apprenticeships

The ApprenticeshipUSA-NH project will receive a $1.2 million grant from the Department of Labor

The project, supported  by Sen. Shaheen, will serve 133 apprentices in the Granite State with a focus on women, low-income, veterans and other underrepresented populations

(Manchester, NH)— U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) announced today that the Community College System of New Hampshire was awarded $1.2 million by the Department of Labor (DOL) to fund the ApprenticeshipUSA-NH project. The grant is part of the Administration’s ApprenticeshipUSA initiative to expand apprenticeships in diverse industries nationwide. With this new grant, the Community College System of New Hampshire will create a Registered Apprenticeship system in the Granite State that builds upon the momentum of several initiatives aligned with state economic, workforce development and educational goals. The ApprenticeshipUSA-NH project will serve 133 apprentices, with special emphasis on underrepresented populations including low-income, individuals with disabilities, youth, women, and veterans. Senator Shaheen has been a strong supporter of the ApprenticeshipUSA initiative since its creation in 2014.

“This is an important investment in New Hampshire’s workforce,” said Senator Shaheen. “The ApprenticeshipUSA-NH project will invest in Granite State workers to advance their skills and knowledge for today’s job market, while also strengthening our economy. I am proud to have worked with the Administration in support of the ApprenticeshipUSA initiative so we can engage more young people, women, veterans and other underrepresented people in apprenticeships to provide them with the skills they need to find a career they love. This program demonstrates that when we invest in our workers, we are investing in our businesses and economy as a whole.”

“The Community College System of New Hampshire has been integral in our efforts to build an even stronger workforce in New Hampshire, helping to ensure that our young people are equipped with the skills, knowledge and innovative thinking needed for success in the good jobs of the 21st century,” said Governor Maggie Hassan. “The ApprencticeshipUSA grant will support the community college system’s efforts and build on other initiatives already underway to develop a stronger apprenticeship system in New Hampshire that is responsive to industry demand and allows for the inclusion of all Granite Staters. The future economic sustainability of New Hampshire depends greatly on our ability to provide a strong economic foundation where all citizens have access to great jobs that provide a sustainable wage and growth opportunity, and I was proud to support the community college system’s ApprenticeshipUSA grant to help us achieve that goal.”

“I thank Senator Shaheen for her strong support of the ApprenticeshipUSA initiative since its creation in 2014, and I look forward to continue working with members from both parties to build an even stronger, more innovative New Hampshire where all Granite Staters who work hard have the opportunity to get ahead and stay ahead,” Governor Hassan said.

Job-driven apprenticeships are one of the surest paths to provide American workers with the skills and knowledge they need to acquire good-paying jobs and grow the economy. More than 90 percent of apprentices are employed after completing their programs, with an average starting wage above $60,000. International studies suggest that for every dollar spent on apprenticeship, employers may get an average of $1.47 back in increased productivity and greater front-line innovation.
