Shea-Porter Dominates Guinta in Second Debate

North Conway, NH— Tonight, Carol Shea-Porter continued her dominant debate performances, holding Guinta accountable for his constant deception of New Hampshire voters. On issue after issue, Frank desperately tried to inflate his record, but Carol wouldn’t let him. She held him responsible for voting against funding for opioid treatment and prevention and for failing to provide adequate funding for the new programs passed last summer. He wasn’t able to defend his irresponsible votes to take drug treatment away from 6,000 people.

“This is important work that needs to be done, but if you’re going to vote against the ACA than you’re voting to take away treatment. There’s no other way to explain that. You actually voted against the bill, the Omnibus, last December which had money for treatment for opioid and heroin addiction,” Shea-Porter said. “Now you’re on the Budget Committee. You didn’t get your budget passed.  But you voted for things in the Budget Committee, and one of them, you had an opportunity to vote for more money for the opioid crisis, and you said no. So you can’t stand here and say that you know that we need these resources and then go to Washington and vote against it,” added Shea-Porter.

Shea-Porter laid out her plans for the future, “There’s no statute of limitations on caring for people,” she said. She called for affordable higher education for Americans and highlighted her record expanding Pell Grants and lowering student loan interest rates by having students apply directly for a federal school loan. The subsidies that banks used to collect were plowed back into increasing Pell Grant funding.

On funding for education for children with disabilities, Shea-Porter said, “It’s really shameful, it’s a commitment [Congress] made, and they should honor it.” She showed the audience her compassion and commitment for fighting for all Americans, not just those at the very top. “We have to keep working at this because it’s an obligation we have to every child no matter where that child is no matter what the zip code is, no matter what the difficulties that their family faces or the child faces, the challenges. Every child deserves an opportunity to be fully engaged and part of what I call a piece of the American Dream,” concluded Shea-Porter

FACT CHECK: Guinta Misleads Voters About His Record Combating The Opioid Crisis

Without Congressional Appropriations Opioid Funding Sits In Limbo

Rochester, NH— Last night, Congressman Frank Guinta misled NHPR listeners about federal actions and funding for the heroin and opioid crisis, and he should acknowledge it, because facts matter. Congress has only appropriated $7 million to combat the opioid crisis—for the entire nation. This is ridiculously insufficient. It’s dangerous to pretend that Congress has funded this crisis when it hasn’t.

When NHPR pointed out that Senator Shaheen asked for $600 million in emergency funding, Frank Guinta responded by saying, “We had passed $500 million last year in the Omnibus and this is $192 million a year for the next five years, so we’re on track to exceed that number.”

Here are the facts:

  • Congressman Frank Guinta voted against the $500 million last year. He actually voted against the whole budget and if he he had had his way, the government would have shut down, shutting off essential programs to treat addiction.
  • The $192 million in authorizations has not been funded. The funding isn’t real until it’s been appropriated.
  • Congress has only provided $7 million for the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, roughly $140,000 per state. So we are not on track to exceed that number; we are not even close.

“Instead of taking 52 days off this summer, Speaker Ryan and Congressional Republicans should have done their job and passed legislation to actually fund a bill to help families and communities who are struggling with addiction issues,” said Shea-Porter spokeswoman Naomi Andrews.

On National Coming Out Day, The Human Rights Campaign Endorses Carol Shea-Porter For Congress

hrclogo-withwords-1600x900_800_450Yesterday was the 28th anniversary of National Coming Out Day. “Every year on National Coming Out Day, we celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) or as an ally,” wrote the Human Rights Campaign.

“28 years ago, on the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, we first observed National Coming Out Day as a reminder that one of our most basic tools is the power of coming out. One out of every two Americans has someone close to them who is gay or lesbian. For transgender people, that number is only one in 10,” the HRC added.

One of those strong “allies” for the rights of the LGBTQ community has always been Former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter.  This is why it was no surprise that on the 28th anniversary of National Coming Out Day, the Human Rights Campaign announced their endorsement of Shea-Porter for Congress.

Carol Shea-Porter has been a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights. In 2010, she led the fight to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” to end discrimination in our Armed Services. She was successful in this effort, rallying support in the House to finally repeal the discriminatory policy.   She signed the historic amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. She was an original cosponsor on the Respect for Marriage Act, which would have repealed the Defense of Marriage Act and required states to honor same-sex marriages performed in other states for the purpose of administering state and federal benefits.

Her opponent has a shameful record.  Congressman Guinta voted to support the anti-equality DOMA law, voted to delay Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and voted against LGBT domestic violence protections. Mr. Guinta was also in attendance when the NHGOP voted against supporting marriage equality.

Mr. Guinta received a “16 out of 100” on the HRC’s 114’th Congressional scorecard. Mr. Guinta voted against seven of the eight bills the HRC supported in the House.

“I am so proud to once again earn this endorsement from the Human Rights Campaign. HRC is a respected and effective voice for equality in our great country, and I am thankful and honored to be endorsed by this wonderful organization,” said Shea-Porter.

Thanks to the landmark Supreme Court decision, Marriage Equality is the law in every state.  But did you know that a worker can be fired or evicted from their home because they are gay?  Many states lack anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBTQ Americans from being targeted by their employer or their landlord.

This is why we need Carol Shea-Porter back in Washington, to help pass the “Equality Act.” A bill to ensure that all LGBTQ Americans, in every state, share the same, strong anti-discrimination protections under the law.  By passing the Equality Act, Congress would automatically overturn North Carolina’s dreadful LGBTQ discrimination bill HB2.

“No one should be fired, evicted from their home, or denied services because of who they are or whom they love. All LGBTQ Americans deserve a fair chance to earn a living and provide for their families and this bill will help ensure that all employees are hired, fired or promoted based on their performances,” wrote the HRC.

Guinta’s Response is Unacceptable And Should Drop Support Of Trump Completely

Shea-Porter Campaign Calls on Guinta to Drop His Support for Trump Immediately.

Rochester, NH— After waiting all night to see how Trump’s despicable comments would play-out politically, Frank Guinta released a hollow, non-statement that makes it clear that he is still endorsing and voting for Trump even though many other Republicans are denouncing him. Paul Ryan refused to campaign with Trump. Mike Pence, his running mate, says “I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them,” jumping off a sinking ship. Even Kelly Ayotte is now refusing to vote for him. Conservative Republicans all across the country, from Jason Chaffetz to Scott Garret to, are pulling their support.

Guinta must do the same and acknowledge that the man he has supported for president, Donald Trump, believes that he is entitled to sexually assault women. Simply calling these comments unacceptable and then moving on like nothing ever happened is precisely what’s stomach-turning about Frank Guinta. Frank Guinta says he wants to have “an honest conversation about the very real problems our state and country face.” But Frank deliberately ignores the issue—people have a very real problem with his nominee thinking that he can verbally and sexually assault women because he’s “a star.”

While many Republican leaders called the video sickening and repugnant, Guinta’s statement included a hard pivot back to his own campaign. This comes as no surprise to those that have watched Frank Guinta over the years.

Frank Guinta will do anything to save his political career, including sticking with Donald Trump. Because Guinta’s response was embarrassingly inadequate, the Shea-Porter Campaign has decided to assist him. Here’s what Guinta should have said: “I find these comments utterly disgusting and repulsive. They are not just unacceptable, but completely disqualifying for public office. Women are not objects that can be groped whenever a star or wealthy individual sees fit. This is sexual assault, and I won’t stand for it or support a man who believes it’s okay. I will not vote for Donald Trump in November.”

Carol Shea-Porter released the following statement in response to Congressman Guinta’s illogical and insulting pivot:

“Frank Guinta’s just brushed off Trump’s disgusting behavior. He must drop his support for the Republican nominee immediately. Trump’s comments were offensive, repulsive, disgusting, and inexcusable. It is very telling that Guinta continues to support, endorse, and vote for a man who feels that his stardom entitles him to sexually assault any women he finds attractive.”

In New Campaign Ad ‘Vision’, Shea-Porter Showcases Distinct Differences Between Candidates

In New Hampshire’s First Congressional District, we have two very distinctly different choices.

Guinta ABC MailerIn one corner we have Congressman Frank Guinta, who in 2010 won the distinguished title of “Most Corrupt Politician” from the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Guinta has also been busted by the FEC once for illegal campaign contributions and already has another FEC complaint against him.  Guinta receives lavish campaign support from the Koch Brothers network, The Americans for Prosperity, and dozens of special interest Super PACs.  During previous campaigns Guinta received heavy support from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) who actively lobby against unions and push for so-called “Right to Work” in our State House.

In the other corner we have former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, a proven fighter against the special interests and who refuses to take corporate PAC money.  She is committed to preserving Social Security and Medicare for future generations and refuses to let politicians balance their budgets on the backs of seniors.  Shea-Porter is a strong labor ally who has fought hard against attacks on workers rights and specifically against attacks on the USPS.

“I’m running for Congress because New Hampshire needs an independent voice, someone who isn’t beholden to corporations or special interests. DC Democrats weren’t very happy when regular citizens asked me to run again because they know I’m independent and I refuse to accept corporate PAC or DC lobbyist money.  When I’m back in Congress, I’ll once again stand up for veterans, seniors, students, and working men and women.  I’ll fight for raising the minimum wage, for equal pay for equal work, paid family leave, affordable child care, Planned Parenthood, and debt-free college,” said Carol Shea-Porter.

Earlier this week, the Carol Shea-Porter for Congress campaign released “Vision,” their first campaign ad of the season.

The 30-second spot highlights Carol’s commitment to New Hampshire values: family, hard work, responsibility, and fairness.  In the ad, Carol talks about her priorities, like passing equal pay for equal work, raising wages for workers, and making sure veterans get the benefits they deserve.

Shea-Porter Calls On Guinta To Renounce Trump’s Statement About Veterans With PTSD

Congressman Frank Guinta remains silent after Donald Trump attacks veterans suffering from PTSD as not being “strong enough.”

Yesterday at an event with Retired American Warriors PAC, Donald Trump implied that veterans returning from combat with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are not strong enough to handle it.

“When people come back from war and combat and they see maybe what the people in this room have seen many times over, and you’re strong and you can handle it, but a lot of people can’t handle it,” Trump told a room full of veterans.

According to the Lone Survivor Foundation, “1 in 3” combat service members return with “invisible injuries” like “combat trauma, traumatic brain injury (or both).”  Combat trauma, or PTSD, has many tell tale warning signs such as “flashbacks, avoidance, isolation, hyper-arousal reactions including anger outbursts.”

On average we lose 22 veterans a day to suicide. Many of these veterans are suffering from PTSD reliving the worst moments in their lives, over and over again.  Many veterans organizations have put access to treatment for PTSD as their highest priority.

We should not be surprised by Trump’s comments about veterans suffering from PTSD as he said that Senator John McCain was not a war hero because “he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

Ironically, Trump himself avoided military service four times through student deferrals and was eventually medically disqualified in 1968. He told reporters at the Washington Post that he had “a bone spur in his foot, but did not recall which foot had been injured.”

In New Hampshire, Congressman Frank Guinta, one of CREW’s most corrupt politicians, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, remained silent after Trump’s outrageous statements last night. Guinta’s opponent, former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, condemned Trump and called for Guinta to “renounce Trump’s comments” in a statement released last night.

“Frank Guinta is serving as a lapdog for Donald Trump instead of standing up for the people Trump is bullying. Trump’s newest attack is again on veterans, and again, Mr. Guinta is silent. Carol Shea-Porter was a military spouse and served on the House Armed Services Committee.  She has met many brave men and women who served their country in war and are now being treated for PTSD. They are heroes and do not deserve Trump’s insults,” said Naomi Andrews, spokeswoman for Carol Shea-Porter.

This is not the first time Guinta has taken heat over his “support” for veterans.  Last week we released a story about Guinta’s “double speak” when it came to supporting veterans and funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Guinta voted against the Omnibus Appropriations bill that funds the government. The bill increased fundingfor the VA by $6.4 billion. The legislation, which fortunately was not tanked by Guinta’s refusal to support it, increased funding for medical care by $4.7 billion and provided funds to hire 770 VA disability claims processors to tackle the claims backlog.”

Will Guinta continue to support Donald Trump who: attacked war hero, John McCain; disparaged the Kahn’s, a gold star family who lost their son in combat; and implied that combat service members returning with PTSD are not strong enough.

If this is the type of “support” that a Trump/Guinta ticket has to offer, they can just keep it.

Congressman Frank Guinta’s Double Speak On Supporting Veterans

“Don’t tell me what you value, show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value,” proclaimed Vice President Joe Biden in a 2012 speech.

Vice President Biden is basically saying is that if you are not willing to pay for something you say you value, then you really don’t value it at all. This type of double speak is common among some politicians.

In New Hampshire, Congressman Frank Guinta talks a good game about his support for veterans, but in Washington, he has a long history of failing our veterans.

“Our nation’s active duty personnel and veterans risk their lives to ensure our country remains safe in the face of ever evolving threats. Our military heroes deserve the very best, and as your representative to Washington, one of my highest priorities is to protect and expand the resources, services and support available to them.

We must keep our promise to provide for those who courageously put their lives on the line to serve and protect our great country. I have always been a strong advocate for our military members and veterans in the Granite State,” wrote Guinta on his website.

We owe our veterans the benefits they’ve earned, but Frank Guinta has consistently voted against increasing funding for veterans programs.

“Don’t tell me what you value, show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value.”

Just nine months ago, Guinta voted against the Omnibus Appropriations bill that funds the government. The bill increased funding for the VA by $6.4 billion. The legislation, which fortunately was not tanked by Guinta’s refusal to support it, increased funding for medical care by $4.7 billion and provided funds to hire 770 VA disability claims processors to tackle the claims backlog.

In one fell swoop, Guinta voted to shut down the government and refused to increase funding for critical veterans programs. He even called these important funding increases “inducements to vote for more federal bloat and debt.”

While serving on the Budget Committee this year, Guinta rejected an attempt by Congressman Seth Moulton, an Iraq war veteran, to increase funding by $340 million for FY2017 and $1.14 billion for FY2018. These increases would have been paid for raising taxes on the wealthiest and repealing tax breaks for Big Oil and corporations that ship jobs overseas.

“Frank Guinta may claim to fight for our veterans, but his votes prove that he betrays them in Congress.  His votes against increased funding for medical care, VA claims processors, and repairs to crumbling VA facilities show his dishonesty and disrespect for veterans,” said Carol Shea-Porter spokeswoman Naomi Andrews. “His Budget Committee votes place multinational corporations, billionaires, and Big Oil ahead of our obligations to our veterans. Carol Shea-Porter was a military spouse and is proud of her husband and all of America’s veterans. She looks forward to working again for our troops and our veterans in Congress.”

It seems pretty clear that Frank Guinta’s claim to be “a strong advocate for our military members and veterans” is just campaign double speak.

Frank Guinta Violates FEC Regulations Yet Again, Triggers New FEC Complaint

The New Hampshire Democratic Party Files
FEC Complaint Against Frank Guinta

Concord, N.H. – On Monday, the New Hampshire Democratic Party filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission regarding Mr. Guinta’s violation of the terms of a Conciliation Agreement he had signed with the FEC just last year, and violation of federal law against using campaign funds for personal use.

Guinta Is A Damned Liar

Front page editorial from Joseph McQuaid, Publisher of the Union Leader.

In the original FEC ruling, the FEC determined the money Guinta “loaned to his campaign,” was actually his parents money thus making the donation an illegal campaign contribution.

For years, Guinta lied to the people of New Hampshire about where they money came from. He repeatedly claimed he forgot about a savings account with over $350,000 in it. Later he claimed the money was a “family pot” that he was free to use.  The people of New Hampshire did not believe him and the FEC proved through their investigation, that he was lying.

The FEC and Guinta entered an agreement that the Guinta campaign would have to refund the $355,000 dollars to his parents and pay a minimal fine of $15,000.

According to the NHDP’s new complaint, the NHDP is alleging that the Guinta campaign gave some of the money intended to be returned to Guinta’s parents, to himself.

Former State GOP Chair, Fergus Cullen, was the first to highlight that Guinta put the money into an account within his control and listed the money deposited as an asset in his FEC disclosure statement.

“We think it’s important for the voters of New Hampshire to know that Frank Guinta continues to engage in this type of behavior, which is in violation of the law, and a violation of the agreement that he voluntarily entered into,” said former NHDP Chair Kathy Sullivan.

Noting his vantage point as a former member of Congress, Paul Hodes stressed that “it’s really rule number one” for candidates not to mix campaign and personal funds.

The disturbing nature of these violations is the flagrant disregard for the law over several years and campaign cycles. “This is a pattern,” added NHDP Chairman Ray Buckley. “Frank Guinta and his campaign spokespeople have lied over the past four cycles. Why does anyone believe that the people of New Hampshire can trust anything that Frank Guinta says?”

Please see below for a copy of the complaint filed on Monday.

In November, Voters Will Hold Guinta Accountable For His Vote Against The James Zadroga Act

“September 11th is a day to honor their service and sacrifice, as well as all those who lost their lives in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C”

Congressman Frank Guinta (9-9-16)

Congressman Frank Guinta Votes Against Legislation That Would Have Continued Lifesaving Care To Thousands Of First Responders.

September 11th 2001 was one of the darkest days in American history. It was the day that terrorists hijacked multiple airplanes and flew them directly into the World Trade Center in New York City.

Many can still vividly remember the attacks and the towers falling down. Others remember was the heroic actions of New York City’s first responders who ran directly into the buildings to help save the innocent people trapped.

Just prior to September 11th of 2016, Congressman Frank Guita (R-NH) said:

“September 11th is a day to honor their service and sacrifice, as well as all those who lost their lives in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C”

Officer James Zadroga

Officer James Zadroga

For months thousands of dedicated first responders dug through the rubble of the fallen towers in an effort to recover those lost.  Brave men and women like Officer James Zadroga who spent more than 450 hours “working the pile.”

“Weeks after his time at the World Trade Center site, Zadroga developed a persistent cough, and, as the months progressed, he developed shortness of breath and became unable to walk distances more than 100 feet without gasping for air,” wrote the IAVA in their letter of support for the Zadroga reauthorization. “Zadroga was the first NYPD officer whose death was attributed to exposure to his contact with toxic chemicals at the attack site.”

In 2010, Congress passed theJames Zadroga  9/11 Health and Compensation Act that provided healthcare for the now thousands suffering a multitude of health problems stemming from the toxic chemical exposure of rescue and recovery operations.  Then Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) was one of the first to co-sponsor the original legislation that would authorize the program for five years.

“Carol Shea-Porter was proud to co-sponsor and help pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010. The Zadroga bill in both 2010 and 2015 was a moment when Democrats and Republicans were able to come together and make sure that our 9/11 heroes were put above politics,” said Shea-Porter spokeswoman Naomi Andrews.

However in late 2015, the reauthorization for the Zadroga Act was coming up and though many claim to support our first responders, the bill could not get through the Republican controlled House. Because the bill could not get a vote on it’s own, the Zadroga Act was eventually added into the “omnibus” or government budgetary spending bill.

screen-shot-of-omnibus-with-zadroga-act-pmThough the omnibus bill did pass and we avoided another government shutdown, Congressman Guinta voted against it and the Zadroga amendment within. Mr. Guinta said that he voted against the Omnibus and the money for our heroes because, in his own words, “they are merely inducements to vote for more federal bloat and debt.”

Congressman Frank Guinta thought he could get away with voting against the James Zadroga  9/11 Health and Compensation Act. But this was a brutal vote against our heroic firefighters, police, and others, and he will be held accountable in November for rejecting healthcare for our 9/11 heroes.

“Congressman Guinta put his political and ideological interests before our 9/11 heroes. Firefighters, police, and other First Responders now know they cannot trust Frank Guinta to represent them. They also know that Carol voted for that funding, and that she will continue to honor them and their sacrifices,” added Andrews.

Guinta and Ashooh’s Friend, Jerry DeLemus Expected To Plead Guilty To Federal Charges

Rochester, NH–  Jerry DeLemus, Trump’s Veteran’s Coalition co-chair, who is praised and admired by both NH-01 Republican Congressional Candidates Rich Ashooh and Frank Guinta, is expected to plead guilty next week to federal charges stemming from his role as “Sheriff” in the standoff at Cliven Bundy’s Nevada ranch in 2014.

Republican Congressional Candidate Rich Ashooh has said nothing. Perhaps he is hoping that nobody knows how much he admired Jerry DeLemus, even though he knew him to be an extremist who started a Glen Beck 9/12 chapter in NH, was a birther, and supported extreme right wing positions. In spite of that, Rich Ashooh was a guest at an event for a PAC that Delemus headed, and in a speech there, called Jerry DeLemus “the fist of liberty.”

Republican Congressional Candidate Frank Guinta defended his good friend.  In a letter that DeLemus’s attorney submitted to the court, Guinta wrote: “(I) have found [DeLemus] to be a man of strong passions with a thirst for freedom.”

Naomi Andrews, spokeswoman for former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter released the following statement:  “NH-01 Republican Congressional Candidates Frank Guinta and Rich Ashooh’s support and open approval of so many of Jerry DeLemus’s actions and hateful statements, coupled with their support for Donald Trump and silence on Trump’s actions and hateful statements, prove they lack judgment and moral courage, and do not represent New Hampshire values.”
